# The Best Motion Token Tools in 2026

> Use Tokens Studio to author and sync tokens from Figma. Use Style Dictionary to transform one token source into CSS, iOS, Android and JavaScript outputs. Use Figma variables for the values Figma itself can hold. Use CSS custom properties when you only need the web. Use ExodeUI motion tokens when the animation file itself must consume the same names. The important decision is naming and hierarchy, not the tool.

*We make ExodeUI, which supports motion tokens in its own file format and docs. It is one option here; the point of the page is the approach, not the tool.*

Most design systems define colour and spacing tokens and leave motion as a set of values someone typed into a component. That is why the same button eases differently on three screens. Motion tokens fix this: named durations, easing curves and springs that both design and code consume.

## Quick picks

- Authoring tokens in Figma: **Tokens Studio**
- One source, many platform outputs: **Style Dictionary**
- Values designers can use inside Figma: **Figma variables**
- Web-only, no build step: **CSS custom properties**
- Tokens consumed by the animation file: **ExodeUI motion tokens**

## The 5 best motion token tools

### Tokens Studio

Best for: Authoring tokens in Figma and syncing them to a repository
Platforms: Figma plugin, browser
Price: Free plan; paid plans for teams and advanced sync
Output: JSON tokens synced to Git or exported

Tokens Studio is the most common way design teams manage tokens inside Figma. It handles composite values, themes and sets, and can push JSON to a repository so code consumes the same source. Motion tokens work as long as you define the right types for duration and cubic-bezier values.

Pros: Designers author tokens where they work; Git sync keeps design and code aligned; Supports themes and multiple sets

Cons: Motion types need conventions you define; Paid tiers for team features

### Style Dictionary

Best for: Turning one token file into CSS, iOS, Android and JavaScript
Platforms: Any (Node.js)
Price: Free and open source
Output: Platform-specific token files

Style Dictionary is the build step that makes tokens real: it reads your JSON and writes CSS variables, Swift, Kotlin and JavaScript constants. It does not care whether the token is a colour or a spring stiffness. If you ship to more than one platform, this is usually the piece that holds the system together.

Pros: One source for many platforms; Custom transforms and formats; Free and widely used

Cons: Requires a build pipeline; Configuration is developer work

### Figma variables

Best for: Values that designers apply directly in Figma
Platforms: Figma
Price: Included with paid Figma plans; limits vary by plan
Output: Variables usable in Figma and exportable

Figma variables cover numbers, strings, colours and booleans, so a duration can be a number variable and an easing curve a string. They are the lowest-friction option if the team already works in Figma, but they do not replace a build step that produces platform code.

Pros: Native to Figma, no plugin required; Modes for light and dark or brand variants; Good starting point for a small system

Cons: Limited typing for complex motion values; Still needs a pipeline to reach code

### CSS custom properties

Best for: A web-only system with no tooling
Platforms: Web
Price: Free, built into the browser
Output: CSS variables

Custom properties are enough for many products: define durations and easing curves once, use them in transitions and animations, and override them per theme. The limitation is that they do not reach native apps and they are easy to bypass when someone hardcodes a value.

Pros: No dependency or build step; Works with any framework; Easy to inspect in dev tools

Cons: Web only; No validation or documentation

### ExodeUI motion tokens

Best for: Keeping the animation file and the app on the same values
Platforms: Browser and desktop editor; runtimes for web and mobile
Price: Free Community plan; Professional $29/month
Output: Motion tokens referenced by an .exode file

ExodeUI documents motion tokens as part of its file format, so durations and springs used in the animation can match the ones in code. That is the gap most token systems leave open: the design tokens are shared, but the animation file still has its own numbers.

Pros: Same names in the file and in the app; Covers springs, not just durations; One file across web and mobile

Cons: Only relevant if you use ExodeUI; Not a general token build tool

## What to tokenise, and what not to

Tokenise durations, easing curves, spring settings and a small set of named transitions such as enter, exit and emphasis. Do not tokenise every individual animation: a one-off page-load sequence with five timings is not a system, and turning it into tokens makes it harder to change. Aim for a short list people can remember.

## Naming beats tooling

A hierarchy of motion.fast, motion.base, motion.slow plus easing.standard and easing.emphasised is understandable a year later. Names exported from a design file, such as duration-200-cubic, are not. Pick semantic names, document what each one is for, and let the raw values change behind them.

## Frequently asked questions

### What are motion tokens?

Named values for animation: durations, easing curves, spring stiffness and damping, and sometimes whole transitions such as enter or exit. They let design and code use the same motion instead of retyping numbers.

### Can Figma variables hold easing curves?

Figma variables support numbers, strings, colours and booleans. A cubic-bezier curve can be stored as a string, and a duration as a number, which is enough if your pipeline understands the convention.

### Do I need a token tool for a small team?

Not always. A CSS file with custom properties and a short documented list is a real motion system. Add Tokens Studio and Style Dictionary when you ship to native platforms or need design and code to share one source.

### How many motion tokens should a system have?

Usually fewer than people expect: three to five durations, two or three easings and a small set of springs. A long list is a sign that each animation was tokenised instead of designed as a system.

### How do motion tokens reach mobile apps?

Through a build step such as Style Dictionary that outputs Swift and Kotlin, or through a runtime file whose tokens are read by the app. Hand-copying values is the failure mode to avoid.
