The Best GSAP Alternatives in 2026 (And When GSAP Is Still Right)

GSAP being free since 2025 removed the main reason people looked for an alternative. What is left is a set of practical reasons: you are in React and want declarative components, you want a smaller library, you want to stay on browser APIs, or you want a visual timeline instead of code.

We make ExodeUI, which is a design tool with runtimes rather than a JavaScript animation library. It appears here only for product UI animation; for page animation, GSAP and the libraries below are the better choice.

Short answer

Motion is the best GSAP alternative in React, with simpler layout and exit animations. Anime.js is the lightest general-purpose option. The Web Animations API covers basic needs with no dependency at all. Theatre.js is the pick when you want a visual timeline that exports to code. CSS handles simple transitions and scroll effects. GSAP remains the strongest for long timelines, SVG morphing and complex scroll work, and it now costs nothing.

The 5 best GSAP alternatives

1. Motion

Best for: React and Vue apps that want animation to behave like a component

Platforms
Any (JavaScript, React, Vue)
Price
Open source; optional paid extras
Output
Animation inside your own app

Motion, formerly Framer Motion, is the default choice in React. Layout animations, gestures, exit animations and springs are built in, and the API follows the way components already render. For most product UI it is less code than GSAP, though long, choreographed timelines are still easier in GSAP.

Pros and cons
  • Layout and exit animations with very little code
  • Open source and widely used
  • Good gestures and drag support
  • Long timelines are awkward
  • Bundle size grows with features
Framer Motion alternatives

2. Anime.js

Best for: A small, dependency-light library with a readable API

Platforms
Any (JavaScript)
Price
Free and open source
Output
Animation running in your page

Anime.js is compact and pleasant to read: targets, properties, easing, done. It handles transforms, SVG and DOM attributes well. It does not have the scroll plugin ecosystem of GSAP or its timeline depth, so it suits focused effects rather than a whole site choreography.

Pros and cons
  • Small and simple
  • Good SVG and attribute animation
  • Free and open source
  • Fewer plugins than GSAP
  • Less suited to very long timelines

3. Web Animations API

Best for: Basic animation with no library at all

Platforms
All modern browsers
Price
Free, built into the browser
Output
Animation running in your page

The Web Animations API is the browser-native animation engine, exposed through element.animate(). It supports keyframes, timing, easing and playback control, and it can run off the main thread for transforms. For fades, slides and simple sequences you may not need a library.

Pros and cons
  • No dependency to install or maintain
  • Native playback controls and events
  • Good performance for transforms and opacity
  • No timeline composition out of the box
  • More code for complex sequences

4. Theatre.js

Best for: Teams that want a visual timeline and code in the same project

Platforms
Any (JavaScript)
Price
Free and open source
Output
Animation data driving your own app

Theatre.js gives you a sequencer and a properties panel in the browser while the animation stays in your codebase. It is a good fit for 3D scenes and motion that a developer and an animator both need to touch. It is a different workflow from GSAP, not a drop-in replacement.

Pros and cons
  • Visual timeline for code-based projects
  • Good with Three.js and React Three Fiber
  • Animation state is a file you can review
  • Smaller community
  • Extra concepts to learn

5. ExodeUI

Best for: Interactive UI motion that should ship, not be rewritten

Platforms
Browser and desktop
Price
Free Community plan; Professional $29/month
Output
An open .exode file played by runtimes for React, Vue, Svelte, Angular, Solid, React Native, SwiftUI and Flutter

A GSAP animation lives in the codebase, which means every change goes through a developer. ExodeUI puts the motion, the states and the physics in a file that designers can edit and runtimes can play, with an MCP server so AI coding tools can change it too. It is not a general-purpose page animation library.

Pros and cons
  • Designers can change the motion without a code change
  • States and springs rather than one sequence
  • Same file on web and mobile
  • Not a replacement for page-level scroll choreography
  • Requires a runtime package in your app

GSAP is free now, so the comparison changed

For years, the paid Club plugins were the reason to look elsewhere. Since April 30, 2025 all of GSAP, including SplitText and MorphSVG, is free for commercial use, with one restriction: you cannot use it to build a visual animation tool that competes with Webflow. If price was your only reason to leave, you no longer have one.

Choose by the shape of the animation

Short state-based motion inside components: use Motion or CSS. A long choreographed sequence with scroll and SVG: GSAP. Simple, one-off effects: the Web Animations API. A 3D scene with a timeline: Theatre.js. Naming the shape first is faster than comparing feature lists.

Frequently asked questions

Motion that designers can change

ExodeUI keeps states, springs and timing in one open file that runtimes play, so a tweak does not need a code change.
