People ask this because of the name. Framer is a paid website builder, and the library used to be called Framer Motion. The library is now an independent project called Motion, and its site describes it as "free and open source. Previously Framer Motion."
The MIT licence
The motion package on npm is MIT licensed. MIT lets you use, copy, modify and ship the code in commercial products. Keep the licence notice in your dependencies, which your package manager already does.
What Motion+ adds
Motion+ is a paid add-on: extra UI components, premium examples, shadcn and AI Kit installation, and Motion Studio. The Motion+ page lists it at $399 once per developer with lifetime updates. Code you add to your site from Motion+ is MIT licensed. If your own product resells Motion+ capabilities to your users, Motion asks you to contact them about a Builder's Licence.
Is the free library enough?
For most apps, yes. Animations, gestures, layout animations, scroll effects and AnimatePresence are all in the free package. Motion+ saves time if you want ready-made components.
If you need designers to build interactive motion visually and hand it off as a file, that is a different kind of tool. ExodeUI has a free Community plan and Professional at $5 per month billed yearly. We make ExodeUI.
