How do I fix the Rive Flutter 16 KB page size error on Android?

Short answer

Google Play now requires native libraries to support 16 KB memory pages, and older Rive Flutter builds shipped libraries such as librive_text.so that were not aligned. The fix is to upgrade to rive 0.14.x, which Rive says resolves it. If you must stay on 0.13.x, set rive.ndk.version=28.1.13356709 in android/gradle.properties, as a Rive maintainer suggested.

Core Takeaway

  • Android 15+ devices can use 16 KB memory pages
  • Google Play checks that native .so files are 16 KB aligned
  • Best fix: upgrade to rive 0.14.x
  • Workaround on 0.13.x: rive.ndk.version=28.1.13356709 in gradle.properties
  • Verify with the APK Analyzer in Android Studio

Several of the most reacted issues in the rive-flutter repository are about this, for example "Google Play's 16 KB page size compatibility issue" (#547) and reports that librive_text.so was not compatible with 16 KB alignment.

Why it happens

Newer Android devices can use 16 KB memory pages instead of 4 KB. Native libraries built with older NDK settings are aligned for 4 KB pages, and Google Play now flags apps that ship them. Rive Flutter includes native code, so older versions trigger the warning.

Fix 1: upgrade (recommended)

# pubspec.yaml
dependencies:
  rive: ^0.14.11

A Rive maintainer wrote in issue #547 that the 0.14.x line resolves this. 0.14 also changes the Flutter API, so plan time to update your widget code.

Fix 2: stay on 0.13.x

# android/gradle.properties
rive.ndk.version=28.1.13356709

Users in the same issue reported that this cleared the APK Analyzer warnings. NDK 27 also works with extra configuration described in Android's page size guide.

Check the result

In Android Studio, open Build > Analyze APK, look at the lib folder, and check the alignment column for each .so file. Then upload a test build to Play Console before release.

Frequently asked questions

Is this only a Rive problem?

No. Any Flutter plugin with native libraries can trigger it. Check every package with .so files.

Will my app crash on 16 KB devices?

Unaligned libraries can fail to load on devices using 16 KB pages, which is why Play enforces it.

Do I need to change my Rive files?

No. This is about the runtime's native libraries, not your .riv files.

Where can I read Google's guidance?

The Android developer site has a page on supporting 16 KB page sizes.
