Objective Comparison
Rive vs Figma
Rive vs Figma: Rive ships interactive animations that run inside your app. Figma, now with Figma Motion, designs and animates UI that developers build in code. Here is when to use each.

The Fundamental Architectural Difference
Figma is where you design interfaces, and with Figma Motion (2026) you can animate them on a timeline and hand developers CSS, JSON or React code, or export video. Rive makes interactive animations with state machines and ships them as a .riv file that Rive runtimes play inside your app. Use Figma when developers will build the motion in code. Use Rive when the animation itself has to ship and react to the user.
Side-by-Side Matrix
Feature & Capability Breakdown
| Dimension | Rive | Figma | Advantage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Interactive animation that ships in apps and games | Designing interfaces, prototyping and handoff | Tie |
| Animation | Timelines, bones and meshes for character animation | Figma Motion timeline with keyframes, easing and springs; Smart Animate in prototypes | Tie |
| Interactivity | State machines and data binding, driven by your app | Prototype variables and conditionals; no state machine in Figma Motion | Rive |
| What developers get | A .riv file played by an open-source runtime | Copyable CSS, JSON or React code in Dev Mode; MP4, GIF, SVG or WebM files | Tie |
| Platforms | Web, React, React Native, iOS, Android, Flutter, C++, plus Unity and Unreal guides | Wherever your code or video runs | Rive |
| Interface design and collaboration | Not its focus | The industry standard | Figma |
| AI | Built-in Agent, with limits on lower plans | Figma agent and an MCP server for AI coding tools | Tie |
| Pricing | Free editor; exports play a splash screen until Cadet ($9 per seat per month, yearly) | Seat-based Figma plans | Tie |
When to Choose Figma
- Developers will build the animation in code anyway, and they need clear specs or snippets.
- The motion is UI polish: hover effects, loading states and transitions.
- You want to keep design and animation in one tool your whole team already uses.
- You need video or GIF exports for marketing.
When to Choose Rive
- The animation has to respond to user input or app state while it runs.
- You animate characters, mascots or illustrations with bones and meshes.
- You ship to Flutter, native mobile or game engines and want one file across them.
- You do not want developers to rebuild the motion by hand.
We make ExodeUI, which also ships interactive files with state machines and adds UI layout and physics. If neither tool fits, see Rive alternatives
